Counters are a wonderful learning resource that can be used in many ways to show dozens of numeracy concepts. Counters can be used as a teaching tool in preschools, kindergartens and primary schools to develop number knowledge, counting, shape, relationships and position. The use of manipulatives by teachers has proved to have positive effects on learning retention as they are designed to represent explicitly and concretely mathematical ideas that are abstract. The tactile and visual appeal of counters is enhanced by the variety of styles now available. Being able to move counters around to tackle tasks is much less laborious than committing ideas to paper.
